Typically, at least half of the cost of a PV system gets subsidized by government entities. The Federal Government and many of the states offer incentives to encourage the adoption of various renewable energy technologies and conservation measures.
DSIRE is a comprehensive source of information on state, local, utility, and federal incentives that promote renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Here are a few of the programs of interest.
Federal Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit of 30% for Solar Water Heat, Photovoltaics, Wind, Fuel Cells, Geothermal Heat Pumps, Other Solar Electric Technologies. There is no maximum amount. The program expires 12/31/2016. See the following link for more details.
The Pennsylvania Alternative Energy Investment Act, Act of July 9, 2008 provides rebates of up to 35% for Photo Voltaic projects. Check with your vendor for the status of the program before committing to a project
