4CP: Copenhagen’s Aftermath: What Do We Do Next? (7:00 PM)
Richard Whiteford, a member of Al Gore’s Climate Project, was in Copenhagen in December for The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 15) where he spoke to an audience of 800 people from around the world.  Richard is also involved with Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) members, Dr. Paul Ehrlich, Dr. Stephen Schneider, Dr. James Hansen, and others who are working on an effort to get the truth out about climate change.  Richard will show a PowerPoint presentation and talk about what happened in Copenhagen, present some of the newest scientific climate information, and talk about the latest skeptic shenanigans as they get more desperate in the face of indisputable climate change evidence.

Rev. Dr. Owen Owens of the National Religious Coalition on Creation Care (NRCCC), a multi-denominational coalition of religious leaders, will talk about their annual Washington Week event this year in which 50 clergy members held a prayer breakfast at the Willard Hotel.  Dr. James Hansen of NASA presented the keynote speech and received the NRCCC Stewardship Award.  Dr. Owens will talk about their visit with White House staff and more than 30 legislative visits on Capitol Hill.  He will also describe NRCCC’s mission, goals and future plans.

Passive House Standard Educational Event (6:30 PM)
Infusion Coffee & Tea Gallery, 7133 Germantown Avenue
Mount Airy, Philadelphia, PA 19119
Fee: $10 for SBN members, $15 for non-members includes coffee, tea and light fare

Passive House Standard is an energy-centric building certification that approaches zero energy use. Do not be misled by the name Passive House. The standard is applicable to new and retrofit, commercial and residential properties. It is not passive solar design, but is a superior, high performance building envelope designed and constructed for extreme energy conservation while maintaining exceptional health and comfort of the occupants.

Many of Philadelphia's buildings are not eligible for LEED or Energy Star. Passive House Standard has no limitations on building size or use, and the focus on energy is especially relevant for the city's energy and carbon reduction goals. This seminar will introduce the basic principles and technologies of Passive House concepts. We will present case studies (with cost estimates) of completed projects and buildings being designed in the US. Come learn more with Laura Blau and Paul Thompson of GreenSteps LLC and BluPath Design and Tim McDonald of Blox and Onion Flats.

Compost Matters Conference (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM)

Pennsylvania Horticultural Society

Compost Matters is a one-day conference that will look at the current state of composting in the Delaware Valley. With a focus on new developments in food-waste composting practices, the forum will bring together innovators, policy makers, and visionaries in the field, examining current barriers to food waste recovery, public policy issues, and successful models from the region and around the state. The conference is geared toward sustainability professionals from local governments, institutions, and businesses; municipal and state officials; and the interested public. Participants will learn about current opportunities for composting food waste and how to include food recovery efforts in their operations. Tours of local composting sites will be offered on Saturday morning, April 10.

Keynote speaker Will Allen received a MacArthur “Genius Grant” in 2008 for his efforts to promote sustainable farming in low-income neighborhoods. Allen is CEO of Growing Power, a national nonprofit organization based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that supports the development of community food systems. Read a BioCycle magazine article on Will Allen.

A food waste recovery infrastructure is beginning to emerge in southeastern Pennsylvania thanks to:

The opening of the Peninsula Compost Group facility in Wilmington, Delaware. According to BioCycle magazine, when operating at full capacity (500 tons per day) the Wilmington Organic Recycling Center “will be one of the largest source-separated organics composting facilities in the U.S.”

On-farm composting at Two Particular Acres and growing interest among other local farmers. Two Particular Acres was one of the first food waste composting facilities in southeastern Pennsylvania, providing leadership to farm-based composting throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Use of in-vessel composting units, including the Moravian Court Earth Tubs. Funded by the PA Department of Environmental Protection and the University of Pennsylvania, the Earth Tub project at Moravian Court is the first and only on-site, in-vessel composting system serving commercial businesses in Pennsylvania.

Friends Center Tour: On The Road To Carbon Neutrality (5:00 PM - 7:30 PM)
The Delaware Valley Green Building Council Presents...

Friends Center Tour: On the Road to Carbon Neutrality

Presenters:
Christopher Kenney, Associate, UMJN Architects + Designers
The Rev Fletcher Harper, Executive Director of GreenFaith

Program:
More and more religious communities – churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and religious schools – are interested in addressing environmental concerns, but are not certain how to get started. This interest in the environment has been accompanied by an interest in green building – a brand new concept to the religious community.

In this two-part workshop we will get to tour the recently completed FriendsCenter designed by UJMN Architects + Designers. The project has just received LEED Platinum certification, making it the first of it's kind in the state of Pennsylvania, and is the first location in Pennsylvania to utilize deep-standing column wells for geothermal heat exchange. The project also includes a gray water recycling system and a green roof.  Christopher Kenney of UMJN and Rob Diemer of AKF will lead tours of the building and will give a follow up presentation.

The second part of the workshop will feature the Rev. Fletcher Harper of GreenFaith. He will describe GreenFaith’s Building in Good Faith project and resource – a web-based resource to educate religious groups about green building and the LEED standards, and to address the questions and concerns that many religious groups pose when considering green building.

GreenFaith conducted research on religious attitudes and questions about green building for two years prior to designing Building in Good Faith. Harper will present a summary of GreenFaith’s findings, along with recommendations about how green building professionals can work effectively to help religious groups make their building and renovation projects models of environmental sustainability.
Cost: $15 for DVGBC Members, $20 for Non-Members, $10 for students

This program has been approved for 2 AIA CE Credits

Developing An Energy Plan For Your Business (8:00 AM - 10:00 AM)
The Smart Energy Initiative of Southeastern Pennsylvania

and Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation

are pleased to present a seminar:

Developing an Energy Plan for Your Business

Developing an energy strategy for your business is now more imperative than ever. Electricity rate caps are set to expire in PECO territory next year and there is implementation of PA Act 129 this spring to consider. Additionally, there are federal and state alternative energy rebates, like the Federal ITC and the PA state grants/incentives, that can reduce the costs of solar, wind and other technologies for your business.
In this seminar our goal is to:

1. Provide Business Leaders with the knowledge they need to make immediate decisions that can reduce the future cost of energy for their business.

2. Increase awareness of the terminology and supplier base for help with where to turn.

3. Share knowledge of impending legislation and how it will impact future energy costs.

4. Help leaders begin to develop a tailored energy action plan to deal with energy needs.
